Meet the Chooks
2024-11-20
Welcome to Perigee Farm's chicken coop, where our feathered friends play a crucial role in our sustainable farming practices. Our 'chooks,' as we affectionately call them, are more than just egg-layers – they're an integral part of our farm ecosystem.
Our flock consists of a variety of heritage breeds, chosen for their hardiness, friendly personalities, and of course, their delicious eggs. You'll find Australorps, Rhode Island Reds, and Barred Plymouth Rocks scratching around our pastures.
Free-range and happy, our chickens spend their days foraging for insects, seeds, and greens, supplementing their diet with organic feed. This natural lifestyle not only ensures the highest quality eggs but also contributes to the health of our soil and pest control on the farm.
The eggs from our chooks are a testament to their healthy lifestyle – with vibrant orange yolks and firm whites, they're a favorite among our CSA members and local chefs alike.
But our chickens do more than just provide eggs. They're excellent composters, turning kitchen scraps and garden waste into rich fertilizer for our crops. Their scratching and pecking help to aerate the soil and control pests naturally.
We invite you to come meet our chooks on your next visit to Perigee Farm. Watch them scratch and peck, chase bugs, and take dust baths. It's a joyful sight that reminds us of the simple pleasures of farm life and the importance of treating our animals with care and respect.
By supporting Perigee Farm and enjoying our eggs, you're not just getting a delicious, nutritious product – you're supporting a system of farming that prioritizes animal welfare, sustainability, and the production of high-quality, local food. Thank you for being part of our journey!
